Our Story

How it happened
Regular Adult Sports Clubs provide activities for hearing participants. They give participants opportunities to play, communicate and socialize in their communities. These programs have been successful in developing the City of New York where there is a strong volunteer network and sufficient amount of grant money to provide the basic needs of such organizations. However, such programs don’t meet the needs of the Deaf/Hard of hearing (HOH) community. This community feels that they are not welcome or included.
According to a 2014 census, there are around 208,000 people in New York State who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is estimated that one percent of them participated in organized sports in 2016. They were excluded from the full spectrum of communication. As a result, they always feel isolated from the hearing world. The presence of the deaf community in sports is divided and declining due to numerous reasons. Adult sports do not optimize the opportunities for them to experience connection, engage in physical activity, be coached, be a part of a team, learn new skills, and find ways to be meaningfully engaged so that they do not have to indulge in destructive forms of recreation such as illicit drugs, violence, alcohol abuse, or indiscriminate sexual activity.
Having himself faced these challenges, Vladislav Yusupov, the founder, understood them intimately. Vladislav had to do something about these challenges. He decided to make a difference in NYC by establishing the NYC Deaf Sports Club. The NYC Deaf Sports Club provides and enables those in the deaf community to have equal opportunity for organized sports. Clinical studies show that sports and recreation programs can help youth establish lifelong, healthy, physical activity patterns.
