FAQs

What is this NYCDSC all about?

The way we operate our sports organization is like other regular organizations, but we do it in American Sign Language!  Everyone is welcome to play in our leagues. We bring friends, co-workers, and family members together to enjoy a full season in a range of different sports and activities. A league lasts between 7-10 weeks with a final championship tournament. We host national and international sports competition and one-day events.

Why should I join NYCDSC?

We’re the only organization that does our leagues in ASL!

I’ve never played sports before. Can I still play in this league?

Sure! Our leagues are for all levels and no experience is necessary. We are here to have a great time!

I’m actually a pretty good player. Will I still have fun in this league?

Yes, you will. Our leagues are very competitive.

How do I become a Team Captain?

Team Captains are leaders in the Deaf and HOH community. At registration, Captains create and name their full team, then spread the word out to potential players. Captains are the main point of contact between their team and our program managers, and therefore need to keep an open line of communication leading up to, during, and shortly after the season. Captains are expected to be able to manage their teammates if they are doing something that negatively affects our fun atmosphere.

I can’t afford to pay for my entire team. Can I still register as a Team Captain and only pay for myself?

Sure. During the registration process, the captain can choose to pay for the entire team or split the payment across all players. Look at “How to register(soon)” section for further details.

How do I see who has registered for my team?

You will be notified by us as soon as we’ve assigned you to a team. Your team captain will contact you.

Do you offer Corporate/Alumni/Agency Teams?

Yes! They are welcome in our leagues! The process of creating a corporate team is similar as creating a full team. If you want to sign up, please contact us.

Can we change our team name?

Yes! Team names may be changed during the pre-season. Please contact us and we will change it as soon as possible.

What happens after I register?

Yay! You became a member of NYC Deaf Sports Club! After the registration process is completed, you will receive a confirmation email. We will send you further information about the league, schedule, team.

Are the online payments secure?

Absolutely! Our site has secure payment; the registration page uses “https”. We then wrap that page within this site, which is “HTTP”. You are only entering personal & credit card information into an https site. Your payment is secure.

What happens if I have to miss a game?

If you are unable to attend a game, be sure to let your Team Captain know, so they’re aware. No one will be penalized for missing a game.

How do Playoffs work?

Every league we offer includes Playoffs and a trophy. Generally, Playoffs are single-elimination tournaments taking place after the 6th game of the regular season involving the top teams in the standings.

Does every team make the Playoffs?

It depends on the size of the league.

What if our team is short players for a game?

We allow teams to bring substitute players for any of our leagues. If your team is low on players during a game, a substitute player may be given to you before the game starts. During the Finals, this isn’t allowed.

Do I get to keep the T-shirt?

Absolutely! Your shirt is your sports team ID. You may customize anything you like outside of the team logo.

When do I receive my T-shirt?

You will receive it at your first game.

What if I want a refund?

All payments are final. When you register, we custom order a shirt in your size, taking into consideration as we create evenly distributed teams, and even turn other potential players away if we sell out the division.

What if it is bad weather?

If we determine that the game can’t be played due to weather, we will contact all team captains and they’ll contact you. Generally, unless its due to a blizzard or serious weather event, the game will be on.
